The Kentucky Derby will be here before you know it (May 7, 2011) and it has become another one of our annual parties. If your not an entertainer this is a great excuse to give entertaining a try. There is something for people to see and it only lasts 3 minutes. So unlike a football game where people will be over for hours, here it can be as short or long as you like. Have food ready for when people arrive. Serve them a drink immediately upon entering, for the betting crowd have a hat ready with the jockey numbers inside and have a drawing for $5, you can pay out for win, place and show. This way the crowd gets involved and has something to look forward to within the first hour. Have guests arrive at least 30 minutes before the race starts, I do an hour, so everyone is in place before the race begins because if they are late, they miss out.

I'm thinking finger foods this year, spreads on breads, toasted and fresh along with a salad and a dessert like Pecan Tassies. For drinks I'll have beer and beer margaritas. I'm not a big fan of the Mint Julep which would be traditional so I change it up each party. When I set the menu, I'll update what I'm doing and then let you know how it all turns out.
I sent my invites out via FaceBook and Email and then handed out these to the neighbors. I put this invite on blue construction paper, cut in the same shape with just a small rim of blue, punched holes in the shoulders and tied red ribbon through each hole to make a hanger and make it a bit more festive.
