Favorite SF North Beach Places

Happy Hour:
  • Columbus Cafe:  7 days a week after 5pm:  2-4-1 beers.
  • King of Thai Noodle:   $2.50 drafts, $6 appetizers (egg roll OK, Chicken Satay good)
  • Fior D'Italia: 2237 Mason St .  50% off bar menu and all drinks.  Eat a double order of tortellini in cream sauce, sirloin tips in a brown sauce; skip the mussels in white wine, possibly the meatballs - last time they tasted like frozen meatballs.  If dinner have the gnocchi - great in the cream sauce, haven't tried the red sauce.
Cheap Eats:
  • Golden Boy:  Pesto Pizza slice $3.75
  • Busters Cheese Steak:  Philly cheese steak with provalone, large is $9-10 and you get 2 full sandwiches, feeding 2.
  • Tony's Pizza (Stockton & Union):  Skip the sit down restaurant and go to the slice shop next door.  Try the Chicago style slice.  It is the best of the three.  I heard the Incredible Stromboli is incredible but I don't know if they have that at the slice shop so I'll have to check.
Loud Bar Music:
  • The Boardroom:  Loud good music, friendly bartenders, Nachos OK but try pork vs beef next time.  Chips are thicker than I like.  The bacon wrapped tater tots were OK but not exciting.  I do want to try their brunch on Sat/Sun menu and food looked good.
  • Grant & Green:  Great place to eat your Golden Boy Pizza or Busters Cheese Steak.
  • The Saloon:  Live music, dive bar, biker bar atmosphere.
Regular Bar Stops:
Sometime Stops:  We have been to these but they are not regular stops for different reasons (not in area, timing, price, feel or crowd):
  • Comstock (few - check out the troff under the bar)
  • Tosca Cafe (few - specialty, House Cappuccino  Ghiradelli chocolate, steamed milk and brandy) Columbus near Broadway) $6 - temporarily closed
  • Specs' Twelve Adler Museum Cafe (sometimes)
  • The Saloon (few - dive with live music)
  • King of Thai Noodle House (once)
  • Gino & Carlos (sometimes)
  • Northstar Cafe (sometimes)
  • International Sports Club (few)
  • Churchkey Grant Ave. (once)
  • Savoy Tivoli: 1434 Grant Ave (once - music)
  • Rogue Public Ale House (once)
  • Tope: 1326 Grant Ave. (once so far)
Trendy or good place to bring out of towners:
  • Park Tavern - fancier place but a good place for out of towners, pricy regular drinks but they have speciality cocktails.
